Detachment: The Secret to Powerful Reiki

During our reiki classes, we often have students who practice various forms of medicine who wish to augment their healing capabilities with reiki. In a recent class, one such healer was quite stunned when we mentioned the word ‘dettachment’ in the same breath as ‘healing’. Now this is a very important aspect, though quite often underemphasised. Hence, this article.

Compassion and sympathy are wholly different things. Compassion is felt for another person when one is thinking from the higher self’s perspective. Sympathy is merely a play of the ego, a false impression that the person who is suffering is somehow inferior to you, and you are superior due to lack of the same suffering – which is why you feel bad for that person.

Pain is a part of life – it is quite an important part! Instead of feeling sorry for a person in pain, we need to ensure that we provide them enough support and comfort. This is something that cannot be done if you sympathise with a person. If another person’s pain brings tears in your eyes, you cannot be the shoulder he can cry on – because you’ll need a shoulder yourself.

At the same time, by absense of sympathy, we do not mean lack of compassion like the behaviour of Dr. Astana in Munnabhai MBBS. We need to understand that whatever is happening to the person is for his own good – this removes any scope for sympathy – after all, will you sympathise with a person who is experiencing pain as he trains himself for the olympics? No! You know that this pain is necessary for the person to win. In the same way, this pain or problem is necessary for the person to progress in life. No incident is good or bad, it is all part of a higher plan, with only our growth in mind.

But, at the same time, the experience is still painful, because of which we need to be loving and caring towards the person. Be kind to this person – after all he is merely a reflection of you. Wish for him to have strength to bear the pain and courage to face his difficulties – because it is these qualities that will make him a better person. Wishing a person’s pain or problem away does not achieve anything – in doing so you are actually wishing for that person to have lesser opportunities for growth.

So, from now on, let us focus on dettachment and compassion. Whatever happens, is for our own good, and whatever happens to others, is for their own good too. Let us be a part of their journey, a stepping stone in their growth.
